According to cherished regional folklore, nestled deep within the once-dense forests of Amalsad lived a blind, nomadic herdsman. In a mysterious and divinely orchestrated turn of events, one of his cows began offering its milk each day at a secluded spot in the forest—onto a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivalinga hidden amidst the wilderness. Awestruck by this sacred phenomenon, the herdsman recognized the divine presence of Lord Shiva and began performing Abhishekam—ritual libations and offerings—with heartfelt devotion and humility.
Moved by his unwavering faith, the herdsman made a solemn vow: if his eyesight were to be restored by the grace of Lord Shiva, he would dedicate his life to building a temple in His honor. In what is revered as a divine miracle, his vision was indeed restored. Fulfilling his vow, he erected a shrine at the very site where the Shivalinga had revealed itself. In remembrance of this extraordinary act of divine grace, the deity came to be known as Andheshwar Mahadev—‘The Lord of the Blind,’ the one who illuminates the inner and outer vision of the faithful.
