The Legend of Annapurna

The Game of Dice and the Illusion of Food

Goddess Annapurna, revered as the Goddess of food, is the wife of Lord Shiva. In a cosmic game of dice, Shiva wagers and loses everything, including his trident. Seeking help, he turns to Lord Vishnu, who enables his victory. Suspicious of this turn of events, Parvati challenges Vishnu, leading to the revelation that everything materialistic, including food, is an illusion.

Angered by this claim, Parvati who embodies nourishment itself disappears. Her absence plunges the world into barrenness and famine, proving that sustenance is not an illusion but a necessity.

The Return of Abundance

With no food left, even Shiva is humbled and seeks alms from Annapurna, acknowledging the sacred nature of sustenance. In response, Parvati reappears, restoring prosperity and nourishment to the world. This moment marks the inseparable connection between food, devotion, and survival.

Annapurna, the revered Goddess of nourishment, embodies the divine grace that sustains all life. In this captivating Tanjore painting, she is depicted with a serene presence, holding a ladle in one hand and a bowl of food in the other, symbolizing her role as the provider of sustenance.

A Tribute in Tanjore Art

Artist Kamraj brings this sacred tale to life through the richness of Tanjore art, blending gold leaf work, intricate carvings, and vibrant colors. The installation reflects Annapurna’s grace and nurturing essence, reminding us that food is not just sustenance—it is sacred.
